History : The teaching of Anthropology in cotton College marked the beginning of new era in the study of social sciences in this part of the country. The Department started functioning from 1947. It became possible due to the initiative of Late Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi, the first Chief Minister of the state of Assam. His vision was to have all round development of different tribes and communities of Assam, for which he felt the necessity of systematic study of their problems. On his request, Prof. K.P. Chattopadhaya, the then Head of the Department of Anthropology, Calcutta University had prepared a syllabus for the Intermediate Science (I.Sc.) Course and the Department of Anthropology came into being on 15 th December 1947 with 24 students in the first year class. Prof. Mohendra Nath Saloi was the founder Head of the Department. Honours course in Anthropology was introduced in this Department in 1959 and PG course was introduced in 1991. The Laboratories of the Department have been recognized by Gauhati University for carrying out Ph.D. research. This Department has produced as many as 14 ‘Best Arts Graduates’ of Gauhati University since 1959.

The College has decided to introduce Sociology at the Degree level from 2016 onwards as an elective subject. The Department of Anthropology will co-ordinates the nodal department. Accordingly a syllabus Committee is formed by the H.O.D Anthropology.

Ms. Pritisha Bora a Ph.D Scholar of JNU Delhi has appointed as Guest lecturer.

The number of students enrolled in this session is 155.

The classes have started from 1st August, 2016.
