Swahid Mozammil Haque Boys’ Hostel
Year of establishment : 1902
History : Swahid Mozammil Haque (SMH) Boys’ Hostel was established in the year 1902, primarily to cater the need of the students belonging to the Muslim community. Therefore, this hostel was originally known as ‘Cotton Muslim Hostel’ or ‘CM Hostel’ in short. During the initial years, this hostel was started in a hired bungalow. Prof. Maulvi Abu Nasr Muhammad Oheed of Arabic & Persian Department was its first Superintendent. The hostel was shifted to its present premises in 1913. However, in secular, independent India, it was a feudal as well as sordid vile legacy of the British Raj in the form of a hostel intended exclusively for the students belonging to a particular religious faith. It was an anachronism in this modern world and was therefore removed with the sincere efforts of Cottonians in 1985, and CM hostel was made cosmopolitan, and was renamed as ‘Swahid Mozammil Haque Boys’ Hostel’, in memory of Late Mozammil Haque from Mangaldoi in Darrang District (Assam), who was the first martyr of the Assamese Language Medium Agitation launched by the All Assam Students Union (AASU) in 1972. Swahid Haque, who was only a class 8 student of Mangaldoi Boys HS School during that time, was brutally killed on 6th October, 1972 in Kharupetia by miscreants who were opposed to the agitation.
During World War-I & II, the rooms of this hostel were used for keeping the wounded soldiers, i.e. it was used like an Army transit camp. Many noted personalities in various fields of life from Assam in particular and NE India in general were once boarders of this hostel.Seat Capacity : 64 (in 20 rooms)
